Should I Clean My Dryer Vent Myself or Have a Professional do it?

Hello, my name is Daryle Wattson and I have been in the  HVAC industry for over 10 years. On the Internet I have read many question and answer articles about how to clean dryer vents and if a homeowner should clean their own dryer vent and how. In this post I will give you an example of someone with no experience cleaning their own dryer vent, okay. In addition, I will give you information on why a professional may be a better choice when cleaning a dryer vent.

A homeowner decided to clean her own dryer vent because she was having issues with the clothes drying. It seemed that it was taking the clothes more than one cycle to dry. After reading a couple of articles online about dryer vent cleaning the homeowner decided to take matters into her own hands. The homeowner headed onto the roof with a metal pipe in hand and unscrewed the dryer vent cap. This so-called informed homeowner takes the pipe and shoves it down the dryer vent duct several times. Thinking that the duct is clean the homeowner resumes her wonderful life. A few months pass and the homeowner goes into the attic to store some boxes left over from the holidays. Once in the attic the homeowner turns on the light and discovers lint and moisture has been escaping into her attic from a broken dryer vent pipe. The homeowner now has to call a professional to repair and properly clean the dryer vent because she had only read a few articles online about dryer vent cleaning.

Believe it or not the short story I told you was not a story but true fact. This is happening all over the country due to people not having proper training on dryer vent duct code, installation, and proper cleaning techniques. The benefits of having a professional clean your dryer vent may save you money in the long term. Shoving a pipe down the dryer duct is not the proper way to clean a dryer vent so having a professional inspect, clean, and test your dryer vent is the way to go. For little over $100 you can have a professional come to your home and do all the things that I just mentioned. The peace of mind that a professional offers should be worth the hundred dollars. Knowing your home is safe from dryer fires and condensation damage brings me to one conclusion. Having a professional clean your dryer vent at least once a year to ensure your home is safe from potential hidden dangers such as lint buildup resulting from lack of maintenance is key.
